Is DropBox Safe and Secure? Security Issues with DropBox

Is DropBox Safe and Secure? How Secure is DropBox? Well, security issues with Dropbox is a major concern. There are two reasons which make dropbox insecure:

1. Dropbox is based on Cloud Technology. Whats happening in a cloud that is not your own; so it is not safe. You have no control on cloud.

2. Dropbox is registered in the US, and is subject to the PATRIOT Act – the US authorities are able to demand details of you and your account simply because they want them. So Dropbox is just not safe for confidential or incriminating content

But dropbox security and safety depends upon you. You have to make sure how can you secure your dropbox. You caution can decrease the dropbox security issues. Dropbox claims following things regarding security:

1. Dropbox uses modern encryption methods to both transfer and store your data. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and AES-256 bit encryption are used. You can increase the level of security by locally encrypting the files and storing only encrypted files.

2. Your account login is protected by many layers of security including password and two-step verification.

3. Dropbox employees are prohibited from viewing the content of files you store in your account.

4. Other Dropbox users can't see your files in Dropbox unless you deliberately share links to files or share folders.

5. Dropbox website and client software are constantly being hardened to enhance security and protect against attacks.

6. Public files are only viewable by people who have a link to the file(s).

7. Dropbox uses Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) for storage, which has a robust security policy of its own. You can find more information on Amazon's data security from the S3 site or, read more about how Dropbox and Amazon securely stores data.

8. Some third party apps with Dropbox integration will ask for permission to access your Dropbox. To grant access, you will need to log in to your Dropbox account and explicitly press the Authorize button when prompted. You can visit the My Apps section of your account settings to review the apps you've granted permission to and revoke access at your discretion.
